New City, NY - A segment for Good Morning America which aired on March 25, 2008 highlights how a specific chiropractic adjustment can significantly lower high blood pressure.
The study, first published in the Journal of Human Hypertension by George Bakris, M.D. in March of 2007, demonstrated how an adjustment of the 1st bone of the spine helped restore the body’s function that lead to a 17 point decrease in high blood pressure. That same decrease usually takes two different types of medicine to achieve. “The evidence presented in this pilot study supports what chiropractors have seen in their practices for years,” stated Dr. Craig Nugent of New Life Chiropractic. “As people live longer, more and more are relying on medicines to sustain function; this new understanding may help people reduce their dependence and continue to enjoy a high quality of health.”
According to the American Heart Association, one in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure with a least a third of those people not aware of the problem. Chronic high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, heart failure, stroke, or kidney failure.
Chiropractic is the largest holistic health profession in the world which focuses on the function of the spine and the relationship to the health of the nervous system. When nerves experience tension, the body cannot send messages and is unable to adapt efficiently. Chiropractors help by identifying that tension and providing appropriate care.
“Since 1895, chiropractors have been at the forefront of natural healthcare,” Emphasized Dr. Smith “It’s great to see a national morning news show share how specific chiropractic care can impact health.”
A simple screening process can help to identify if problems in the spine can affect blood pressure. Chiropractors receive special training to identify potential problems in the spine called vertebral subluxations. X-ray, computerized technology, and a detailed examination are used to evaluate for specific spine and nerve tensions.
